Behaviour Management

Effective management of children’s behaviour is crucial to creating a positive learning environment both in the classroom and at home. With over thirty- five years of research, practice, trial and error, and serious self-criticism, I have concluded that there are over one hundred understandings, concepts and considerations that parents and teachers would be wise to consider.

One hundred and one considerations are accessed by the link below.

One Hundred and One Important Considerations

These considerations, together with various incentive models for the home and classroom, are being presented in seminars for teachers and parents.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT MODELS

Becoming Responsible Citizens (BRC)

BRC is a classroom behaviour management model for primary/elementary age children. It can be used effectively in classrooms and at home. It is simple and generally motivating. When used as directed, incorporating the concepts contained in the 'Considerations' above, it has a significant positive impact on student’s behaviour and automatically lowers stress in managing behaviour. It is not the ‘magic pill’ for eliminating all inappropriate behaviour in children ... there is no such pill!

The implementation of BRC into my classroom in the early 90's dramatically improved the tone of the classroom. One of the most challenging classes in the school changed so much that a visiting LOTE (Language Other Than English) teacher said that, "This is the best behaved class of all those I teach". This change was achieved without me raising my voice, sending students to the office, keeping students in or assigning extra work e.g. picking up papers or doing extra class work. As a result of decades of designing and assessing many models and systems, BRC contains the essence of effective management. It considers: Becoming Responsible Citizens Workbook

  • Serious disruptions
  • Oppositional behaviour
  • Childish irresponsibility
  • Positive reinforcement
  • Work not completed
  • Regular reporting to parents
  • Legal protection for teachers
  • Logical consequences
  • Choices
  • Relationships
  • Life skills education
  • Self-control
  • Delayed gratification

The model can be used as a behaviour management scheme in its own right, or as a supplement to what is already in place. It incorporates principles aligned with Glasser’s choice theory and relations theory. It uses positive and consequential reinforcers and uses plain old common sense.

The details of BRC, including the use of the student workbook, will be presented in easy-to-understand form later this year.
